Leggings are back

miserable-faceIn all fabrics, from knits to denim, leggings are back. Wearing them smartly depends on your complete look. (No matter what, do not wear leggings at work.)

From the top of your garments down to the shoes or boots you wear, leggings cannot look like exercise or yoga clothing. They have to complement the rest of the clothing to form a complete outfit.

The number one offense with leggings is wearing them with thin tops that barely cover your hips. The second one is wearing thin leggings that are so tight they look like a second skin.

Eye wear trends – heavy frames versus rimless glasses

eyeFull rimmed black and colored glasses have replaced the rimless glasses. The key is finding the right frame size and shape. Your eyes should pop in the frames.

The thickness of the frames looks best when they balance the shape of your face and hair. If your face and hair have a lot of texture, then narrow frames would be best. The opposite is true if your face and hair are very sleek. Then a heavier frame would add character to your face.

Rimless glasses look okay on wide faces because the side pieces will narrow the face.

Be sure to take your time in picking out your frames. They must feel comfortable and you want to feel confident in them. You also should consider having more than one pair.

Crowning glory or a distraction?

72tuGfz7SW2e1DVCrWVf_crownThe face is our main attention getter. Our hair is a frame around it so it should look as good as possible. Here are some dos and don’ts for both men and women:

Men:

Do: Think balance. Your hair style looks best when it is age appropriate and balances your face with the rest of your body.

Do: Clean it up. If you are bald (bald is beautiful) make sure it is completely clean – no fuzz on the back of your neck.

Don’t: Wear a hairstyle meant for an age 10 years younger than you are.

Don’t: Over spray. Your hair should not glisten.

Women:

Do: Wear a contemporary hair style. You can do that just by updating the style you have worn for the last three years.

Do: Have movement in your hair style – it will give it a modern feel.

Don’t: Wear a spiked hairstyle unless you are in the arts and/or advertising field.

Don’t: Over hairspray your hair so that it is as hard as a football helmet.

Follow these do’s and don’ts and your hair will not be a distraction but your crowning glory.

Three-quarter versus full length sleeves

tape-measureThe trend in women’s clothing for tops has been moving toward three-quarter length sleeves instead of full length ones. The reasons are because it saves money, starts something new and helps women for whom sleeve lengths are a problem because they do not have the flexibility of getting sleeves shortened without an added expense.

Three-quarter length sleeves can be wonderful solutions for women who always seem to have sleeves be too long on them. However, make sure this length does not make you look wider, matronly or old lady-like. Suit jackets should come with a full-length sleeve unless it is a summer suit.

Skinny, traditional and straight leg jeans

Jean_6011573Give it to the fashion industry for always wanting to revolutionize how men and women wear jeans. Here are some guidelines:

Straight leg jeans are the modified skinny jean and easier to wear. To pull off the skinny leg jeans you must have very slender legs and the pant leg should not bunch up. The traditional style where the leg is wider but still straight will work well for women with larger legs. Also, the boot cut is coming back. If you were to purchase a new pair today stay with the straight leg one and you will be contemporary.

Adding bright colors

HGTV_Color-Wheel-Full_s4x3_lgThe fall trend for coats is color—no more black, gray or brown coats. Orange and yellow are in. Bright is fashionable. The challenge for bright colors especially when you are used to more subdued tones is that we may buy a bright coat and end up not wearing it. We fold under questioning and go back to the colors that we are used to.

This is where interchangeable scarves can help by adding color. Today’s scarves come in many different fabrics, colors and patterns. Start with solid color oblong ones that you can wrap around your neck. Next, branch out to patterns and bold shapes. The beauty of this is that if you don’t like the color you can quickly choose another one.

How short is too short?

26447en_USI_QuestionMarkMany magazine pictures show celebrities wearing their skirts at least four inches above their knees and in some cases barely covering their behind. Many men are wearing their suits tighter and pants are narrow and shorter.

In today’s business world, the norm is skirt hems just above the knee or one inch shorter and that’s it. For men, dress slacks are being worn with no cuffs and the breaks are not as deep.

If you are going out in the evening you can be a hip celebrity but if you want to be taken seriously at work, stay close to the norms.

What to wear to an outdoor summer wedding

wedding-1It seems global warming has created inconsistent weather – either too hot or cold. Here are some clothing tips so you’re prepared for any type of weather as you’re celebrating the nuptials.

For women:

The designer, Citron, offers a light flowing blouse as well as many wonderful silk prints in tops and dresses. They can be worn with linen or silk pants or skirts. I definitely recommend flat sandals as the shoes of choice.

For men:

The trend continues with linen or silk short sleeve shirts worn un-tucked. Solid colors, such as a dark navy worn with cream pants and sandals, have a more elegant feel. Shorts are not recommended unless it is a very casual wedding.

You will look elegant and always still be temperature ready wearing these recommended clothing items.

Warm or cool colored makeup

red lipstick11127502Bobbi Brown, my favorite makeup artist, and I both agree is it important to recognize your color temperature. If your skin tone is warm it is best to wear blush and lipstick in the warm families with yellow undertones.

For example, a red lipstick would be a tomato color with red undertones. This also suggests that those with colored skin tones can wear blush and lipstick with blue undertones. The red lipstick would be a cherry red with blue undertones. When you try to do the opposite it tends to make your skin look harsh and dry.

Classics never go out of style

that-touch-of-mink-movie-poster-1020503582Just recently, I watched an old movie, A Touch of Mink with Cary Grant and Doris Day. I saw that Cary Grant’s tie and button down navy cardigan is catching on again. Suits with vests, like the ones worn by Cary’s right hand person in the movie, can also be seen on the streets today.

Doris Day’s simple suits and evening wear can also be seen in today’s fashions. Even her hair style is being worn by all ages.

Classic fashion never goes out of style.
