I apologize if I sound like a broken record but from head to toe, the really coordinated folks have all the details of their appearance in order. The hair needs to be well groomed (long hair only works if it is well managed) and complemented by top quality, well maintained accessories; sleeves, jackets and bottom lengths all should lay nicely at the proper spot.
Often, the excuse for a disheveled appearance is a lack of time. However, if you make the time in the beginning when you purchase the items good habits will be there, too. You will then always look your stylish best.
When does too much skin show? Cleavage for women can be challenging as can tops that are too tight.
Men who wear an open shirt collar may have their chest hair show. Shirt sleeves that bunch up and cap sleeves on blouses that are cut too short on fleshy arms also show too much skin.
Here are some rules to help you ensure you are not showing too much skin:
For women:
– Cleavage: The rule of thumb for cleavage is to make sure your top starts no more than four inches from your chin.
– Arms: Sleeveless tops can be attractive if your arms are toned.
For men:
-For men who prefer not to wear a tee shirt, be conscious of chest hair
– Buttoned shirts should not have gaps. Otherwise too much skin may be revealed. Wear a shirt cut larger around the stomach.
A glimpse of skin is a good thing; too much is best left for private moments and on the weekends.
The face is our main attention getter. Our hair is a frame around it so it should look as good as possible. Here are some dos and don’ts for both men and women:
Men:
Do: Think balance. Your hair style looks best when it is age appropriate and balances your face with the rest of your body.
Do: Clean it up. If you are bald (bald is beautiful) make sure it is completely clean – no fuzz on the back of your neck.
Don’t: Wear a hairstyle meant for an age 10 years younger than you are.
Don’t: Over spray. Your hair should not glisten.
Women:
Do: Wear a contemporary hair style. You can do that just by updating the style you have worn for the last three years.
Do: Have movement in your hair style – it will give it a modern feel.
Don’t: Wear a spiked hairstyle unless you are in the arts and/or advertising field.
Don’t: Over hairspray your hair so that it is as hard as a football helmet.
Follow these do’s and don’ts and your hair will not be a distraction but your crowning glory.
When it is better not to alter:
– When the garment is too tight
– When the seams are less than ½ inch
– When the garment has a lining (It will cost double.)
– When the garment is chiffon, silk or lace- (It will leave marks.)
– When the garment has a zipper that needs to moved
When it is best to alter:
– When the garment fits well and only needs either the sleeves or hems altered
– When the garment alteration cost is less than the sale price reduction
Follow these guidelines you will not be disappointed in the alteration results and the related expenses.
Many magazine pictures show celebrities wearing their skirts at least four inches above their knees and in some cases barely covering their behind. Many men are wearing their suits tighter and pants are narrow and shorter.
In today’s business world, the norm is skirt hems just above the knee or one inch shorter and that’s it. For men, dress slacks are being worn with no cuffs and the breaks are not as deep.
If you are going out in the evening you can be a hip celebrity but if you want to be taken seriously at work, stay close to the norms.
Bobbi Brown, my favorite makeup artist, and I both agree is it important to recognize your color temperature. If your skin tone is warm it is best to wear blush and lipstick in the warm families with yellow undertones.
For example, a red lipstick would be a tomato color with red undertones. This also suggests that those with colored skin tones can wear blush and lipstick with blue undertones. The red lipstick would be a cherry red with blue undertones. When you try to do the opposite it tends to make your skin look harsh and dry.
I have always believed that nails look more professional with color polish. However, nails can be made to look worse even with nail polish, if the cuticles are unattractive.
My nails have always been a challenge because I have very dry and unattractive cuticles that are continually aggravated by nail polish. So, I have gone cold turkey and started getting manicures without nail color.
That being said, your hands and nails must look well taken care of. They must enhance your overall professional impact. This also means that you probably need to stay away from distracting polish colors and designs.
Remember, though, that if you go decide to go without nail polish entirely, you must stay vigilant in keeping your nails clean because polish hides the dirt that accumulates underneath them.
It appears that beards are starting to gain in popularity again including being more acceptable in the business world. This is probably partly because some key CEO’s are sporting them.
The key for a beard to look sharp is to keep it maintained and worn close to the face. Beards look best as a neat face cover as opposed to allowing them to grow beyond the chin and down the neck. Scraggly beards will make the person look old and unkempt.
I have always hesitated to wear eyeliner because most of the time it ends up smearing and running down to the lower eye lash lids. But, the correct thickness of eyeliner on your eyelids will make your eyes pop and fresh looking. The challenging part is finding a liner that is easy to use and that does not have a tendency to run. Eye liner like that will always enhance your eyes.
On this topic, congratulations are in order for Bobby Brown! She has come up with a wonderful gel eyeliner pencil. I have used it for a week now and it does not run or smear.
A great example of a traditional piece of clothing for men has been the pleated dress slacks with cuffs. However, the current fashion trend has shifted toward a very modern look with a slimmer leg and no pleats or cuffs.
The challenge for men today is that not everyone can wear these pants and not everyone should. A man will always look elegant if he wears what looks good on him. Wearing the right cut and fit will always appear elegant. Cary Grant always looked good because he shunned current fads and stayed with classic lines that flattered his body.
