The Situation: Looking the Part
Tom has been with the organization for more than 15 years. He has moved up over time to a manager position. Tom oversees a global group of plants with locations inside and outside of the US. Tom has always worked behind the scenes and relates well to each manager. He is now being asked by his mentors to be considered for the executive vice president role. However, some of the other members with whom Tom will be working are concerned that Tom does not look or sound like a senior leader and the face of the organization.
The Solution:
Tom understandably is upset with the feedback about his presence. His ability to make small talk is limited and he appears to be nervous when put on the spot in group meetings. Tom worked with a consultant once a week either in person or via a WebEx meeting. At every third meeting, Tom was videotaped. He continued to review his body language and tone of voice. He learned to choose powerful, engaging words that strengthened his tone. Soon this became more natural to him. Tom also learned to make clothing choices that maximized his presence with senior leaders and enhanced the face of the organization. Tom is small in frame, so it was important to ensure all clothing choices fit well and were appropriate colors. Tom received the coaching he needed to make future choices that enhanced his presence.
The Outcome:
Tom is currently slated to be the next general manager of his group. He has been traveling with senior leaders and they see how the managers of each plant respect him. Tom’s relationships with these teams also has been critical to his promotion.
