January Tips For Professional Success
Tip for Organizations:
We’re ringing in the new year with an event that brings old and new team members together. What activities would enhance the atmosphere without being too competitive?
Answer:
A little competitiveness can be good for a team, especially if it allows members to show their teamwork. Try an international cooking class challenge that gives everyone a chance to enjoy what they create. Or how about an art class with members also performing as a jury. By the way, it’s always a good idea to make sure everyone wins a prize.
Communication Question:
Question:
When getting back with a written response, how can you decide whether a text message or email is appropriate?
Answer:
If responding to a written request, you should get back in the same medium as the original. Otherwise, it is best to ask the receiver what they prefer, since you cannot be sure that they will always check both methods. When I know both methods are safe, I usually use text messages, especially if a response is needed immediately (60 to 90 minutes).
Presence Question:
Question:
It seems that more people are letting their hair go naturally gray as a conscious image-enhancing choice. What are you advising your clients on this subject?
Answer:
Gray hair for men always has a distinguished look. For women, platinum or silver can look smart and contemporary. The risk with hair color is that it should be compatible with your hair style, eye and facial makeup, clothing choices, and, to some extent, your personality to avoid an overall impression that may come off as artificial. Hair color is an important decision. Make it carefully.

Question:
How do you wish a person a Happy New Year when there has been a recent death in the family?
Answer:
Expressing your condolences always comes first. Make sure it is sincere and reflects your connection with the individual. Afterwards, depending on the circumstances, you can make a gentle inquiry about the year ahead.
