September 2019 Business Case Study

September 22, 2019 By Anna

The Situation: A New Boss

Janice is a new member of the senior team. Her main role is providing guidance to managers regarding how best to coach their staff. The organization went through a major shake up unexpectedly. Corporate has replaced Janice’s supervisor with a senior member of the organization, who has worked with different companies in the same field. Janice has had a difficult time communicating with her new supervisor. Janice’s approach has always been to wait and see how the managers feel about empowering their staff. Janice’s new supervisor feels Janice’s approach has not gotten any traction.

The Solution:

Janice has begun to ask her new supervisor specific questions regarding the supervisor’s expectations. She goes into meetings with the senior team and new supervisor with projected timelines and estimates of deliverable results. Janice has begun to take risks and to push for deadlines with her own team. Janice’s team now has become more proactive with their staff and set timelines for results.

The Outcome:

Janice and her supervisor continue to develop an understanding as to what is expected of Janice. The bar has been raised for expectations for results. Janice’s team has set new expectations for their direct reports. The year end of 2019 continues to deliver surprises to stretch Janice’s leadership skills.

Always vote for principle, though you may vote alone, and you may cherish the sweetest reflection that your vote is never lost. John Quincy Adams
