October Tips For Professional Success

Tip for Organizations:

Question:

How can we help managers deal with dotted line team members that fail to respond to communications?

Answer:

The best approach is to keep the communication ongoing, no matter what. It is challenging because these folks have many responsibilities and unfortunately, dotted line managers tend to be the last person they consider. Make sure you meet the individuals in-person, if possible, rather than through video conferencing. Establish guidelines on the communications that work best for all parties, remaining respectful of everyone’s time.

Communication Question:

Question:

How do you handle folks that interrupt the conversation?

Answer:

Chronic interrupters usually cannot help themselves because they lack the patience required to truly listen to others. Acknowledge them with a glance that conveys you will give them a chance to speak. This will help curtail interruptions. Also, be respectful of the listener by avoiding long winded monologues.

Presence  Question:

Question:

Are suits coming back in style at the expense of dresses?

Answer:

The fashion industry has been promoting dresses for a number of years. Younger women love dresses because it is one piece and they tend not to fuss with shoe choices, which vary from sportswear to multicolored pumps. Suits remain a staple for C-Suite women including a jacket matching with companion skirts.

So, yes, it appears that in last few years, suits have been on the rise with fashion stylists on the red carpet and in New York fashion week. Blazers are also back, sporting all colors and patterns.

Question:

How can you ensure inclusion in a work luncheon when you are the other gender of the people in the group? A significant amount of chatting happens at lunch, making it difficult, when not present for the original discussion, to pick up the conversation later.

Answer:

Include yourself. Ask the group, where should we meet, as you hear talk about the place and time everyone is gathering. Then say, Great, meet you all at lunch!
