The Situation: Crucial Conversations
Jan was with the group for more than five years before she received the promotion in early 2017 to a team leader role. During the five years as a member of the group, she developed close friendships in and outside of the office. Since being assigned as the lead, the group has not transitioned to a high producing team. Jan finds it difficult to conduct direct dialog on ways to influence her group.
The Solution:
Jan was unclear about the attributes needed as an effective team leader. She thought challenges would exist but expected the team to self direct. It is very difficult leading a team (or any group) when unpopular decisions loom. Once Jan became consistent in her communications and held members accountable, the team started making progress.
The Outcome:
It has been six months and Jan is making headway in delivering clear messages and holding herself and others accountable. The team has begun to meet senior leader expectations as a high producing group.
