Tip for Organizations:
Question:
We have new associates going to a two-day general trade conference for the first time. What recommendations can we suggest to ensure a successful event for them and our organization?
Answer:
It is important to have a plan on what you would like accomplished. Set dress guidelines on what to wear and ask that the attendees prepare personal introductions and bring business cards. Proper business attire includes a jacket and very comfortable shoes. Have them pair up in twos at the beginning of the conference with the idea that they separate after lunch. This will give them some comfort-zone time to begin to network before they venture out on their own.
Communication Question:
Question:
What is the best way to practice a personal introduction or as some call it, an elevator pitch?
Answer:
When I first started my business, I would practice in the car. I listened to a recording of me speaking and then continued to talk out loud. I would record the introduction on the cell phone and play it back until I could say it easily and with confidence at any given moment.

Question:
I am very shy and have a difficult time starting conversations or even saying hello. What are some exercises that will help me feel more comfortable speaking?
Answer:
Warming up your voice by speaking to yourself out loud before an event is critical. All announcers warm up with voice exercises. Another trick I learned from a singer is to relax your facial muscles by opening your mouth wide for a 10 seconds or so at a time (You might want to be by yourself for this one!) and rubbing your cheeks, lips and chin until you do not feel the tension in your face anymore.
