August Tips For Communication & Image Success

Tip for Organizations:

Question:
Our staff is receiving invitations to summer outdoor events for business. We would like to send out a memo regarding the appropriate dress guidelines in these situations.

Answer:
The venue for the summer outdoor event dictates the casual business dress. A picnic is different than a country club dinner or a baseball game. Stay away from clothing that reveals too much such as low necklines and too sheer clothing for women. For men, if wearing open toe sandals is an option, keep in mind that grooming is critical. Unkempt toes are an ugly sight. Also, a definite no-no for men- baggy low hung shorts.

Question:
How do I handle a shaky voice? This happens during presentations and at various unpredictable times when speaking or answering questions.

Answer:
There are a few things to be aware of that will help minimize a shaky voice. Consistent breathing for one. Breathing too fast can cause a shaky sounding or too loud voice. Also, maintain the same pitch and energy because uncertain command of either can cause your voice to sound shaky.

Question:
Can you wear a black suit for a black tie event?

Answer:
Black tie means a tuxedo for men. Now, I have been to events where there are some men wearing a black suit, white shirt and a black tie with high gloss leather tie shoes. The suit style is conservative and has a polished look to it. So, the no tuxedo has been done but generally, black tie suggests a tuxedo for men.

Question:
What is the appropriate amount of talk time when offering congratulations in a receiving line?

Answer:

This happened to me recently when I waiting to speak to someone in a receiving line. The person ahead of me talked as if no one else was in the line. In a receiving line, say hello then add a comment and a congratulations. Further conversation is for another time. However, if you are the only one in line, you can talk all you want!
