The Situation: Speak with Impact
Marta has been with the organization more than 12 years. She is responsible for marketing and communications for the organization. She continues inspire her team and others around her. However, she tends to stray off subject easily and sometimes ramble when presenting in front of groups. Our goal was to help her be succinct when speaking in front of a group, especially in front of the board of directors.
The Solution:
The key for Marta was to determine how the message affected the audience. Was the message informational or action plan oriented? Marta realized she gave too much information and was not sensitive as she could be to the needs of the group. She began to understand how important it was to not only tailor the message but be make sure the message came out crystal clear. A road map made it easier to follow but Marta was concerned that being too formulated would result in a loss of passion and enthusiasm. Videotaping helped Marta visualize the importance of a clear message while still expressing her passion.
The Outcome:
Senior management and the board continue to be impressed with the passionate nature of Marta’s presentation while delivering a succinct message. Marta now finds it easier to craft a clear, impactful message using a formula that works for her. She also solicits feedback from her team in a dry run before presenting any critical message.
