July Tips For Communication & Image Success
Tip for Organizations:
Question:
The warm weather is upon us. Are sleeveless tops appropriate for women in all situations?
Answer:
Sleeveless tops have become more acceptable, along the lines of no hose, for women in business casual settings. However, when visiting clients / customers sleeves are still required. Sleeveless shirts should be worn with a jacket.
Communication Question:
Question:
I have been told that I have an annoying habit of interrupting people on my team. In my defense, they take too long to explain their points making it difficult to determine when they are finished speaking.
Answer:
Active listening will help you know when a person is finished. Instead of listening in the moment, often, we are trying to form a response. This distracts us, blocking active listening. When you think someone is finished you can ask “May I make a comment or _________.” They will able to tell you if they are finished so you may begin to talk. Also, remember, the smartest person in the room usually is not the one talking!
Presence Question:
Question:
What is professional casual?
Answer:
Professional casual has been used in place of business casual. It is slightly less formal meaning a jacket may not be required for men. They can wear a dress shirt without a tie. For women, a top can be sleeveless (Though, I do not recommend this for customer or client visits.) with a skirt, pants or walking shorts. Sandals are acceptable. To be on the safe side, ask the company or host for some suggestions.

Question:
What are a few icebreaker questions not to use in first meeting in a business social setting?
Answer:
Refrain from asking personal questions including any about the spouse (they may not be married) or what they do for a living. Instead, ask if they are from the area or if they have been to this event before. Easy, thoughtful questions put everyone at ease.
