October 2015 Monthly Tips

Next to doing the right thing, the most important thing is to let people know you are doing the right thing. John D. Rockefeller

October Tips For Communication & Image Success

Tip for Organizations:

Question:
How can I help my virtual group that reports to me to get more visibility with senior leadership?

Answer:
First, be sure that when your virtual group meets at the home office, they each make a point to network by having lunch with other company members. Secondly, when you have group meetings invite one or several of the senior leadership staff that the team would benefit from getting exposure to. Finally, encourage each member to get involved with a project that would give them more visibility in the company.

Communication Question:

Question:
I tend to get nervous with senior leadership in many situations including networking or presenting in front of them. How can I become more confident with them? (With my peers I have no problems.)

Answer:
Practice smiling, saying your name or doing a little mock conversation in front of a mirror before you go to an event where you might interface with senior leaders. This will help prepare you for your encounters with them. For a presentation, practice is critical and preparing some answers to tough questions will help tremendously.

Presence  Question:

Question:
I work from home. How should I dress when no one really sees me?

Answer:
This question came up recently in a talk I gave at the W.Net Summit in Chicago. Dress as if there was an emergency and you had to rush out of the house. You would be presentable and if someone dropped in unexpectedly, you would be not embarrassed.

The Art of Business and Social Interaction®

Question:
In business client situations, where a spouse or partner is invited I usually go alone. My partner is not very social and prefers not to attend them with me. How do I answer when clients ask questions on why I am alone? How do I respond without seeming rude?

Answer:
Simply say, I know she feels badly but because of a conflict she could not make it.
