The Situation:
Changing a leadership communication style
Senior leadership was concerned. They had brought Sam in from other company to help a specific group make some serious changes. After a year, it didn’t appear that any changes had taken place.
More alarming was that when giving an update to senior management, Sam was nervous and rambled quite a bit. Afterwards, it was determined conflict was uncomfortable for him. Also, the team did not appear to be receiving input from Sam when there was a need for resolution. His basic philosophy was that the members should come to a common solution instead of him making the final decision.
The Solution:
Sam began to understand that in order for his group to succeed, they needed his help. He needed to continually ask questions that would bring the team together. So, he began offering different views and asking questions instead of shying away from the debate.
This took weekly coaching that focused on Sam understanding the value of his weekly team meetings. He needed to lead the team in coming up with solutions. Anna facilitated a two day session with Sam and the team to help the team become more open to listening to each other while knowing Sam was there to help them operate as a unit. Sam also benefited from being videotaped which assisted with him becoming more comfortable under pressure.
The Outcome:
One year later, the group has exceeded their goals. Sam is much more confident in presenting to senior leadership and answering their questions. He truly understands the team dynamics and his role as team leader. Sam is now also able to state uncomfortable news as a reality check. Senior management now views Sam as the right leader to manage the group.
