The Situation:
A Black Belt Six Sigma person needed to make a business case to an organization on the value of using this tool. Adam had a difficult time speaking in front of a large group and even to his own organization regarding how to use and especially how to reap the benefits of Six Sigma. Senior management had heard him speak and were very nervous having Adam as the speaker on this topic for this major event.
The Solution:
The first step was to videotape Adam making a presentation. Then, Adam carefully and objectively observed how he did, paying special attention to his body and facial expressions—his silent messages. The content of the presentation— how to use this tool and make the benefits clear to the consumer so they understood and felt comfortable using Six Sigma—was also analyzed.
Adam and I worked on how the tool could apply to everyday situations. We focused on how it made processes easier as well as other benefits. We kept fine tuning the stories and practices so that Adam’s natural speaking style eventually burst through in a positive way. In the end, Adam began having fun because he became more confident from all of the practice.
The Outcome:
Adam presented in front of an audience of more than 300. A senior manager went up to Adam’s boss and asked him how he discovered this star presenter! He never dreamed that Adam had a prior problem presenting and in fact, thought he was a natural.
