July Tips For Communication & Image Success
Tip for Organizations:
Question:
What guidelines do you recommend for our younger associates, who tend to dress very casually, about what clothes to wear on a plane when they need to go directly to a meeting after the flight?
Answer:
A crisp shirt tucked in for men with a jacket. For women, if they choose not to wear a jacket, a sweater set works. If it is a meeting with very senior executives, I do recommend a full suit (matching jacket and slacks or skirts for a women). The jackets can always be taken off if not needed.
Communication Question:
Question:
Often, on a plane I like to rest or catch up on reading material. How do I handle it when the passenger next to me wants to talk?
Answer:
I would start off with some conversation to acknowledge the person. Then, I would politely say, “I apologize but I need to read this material for work” or, “I have an important meeting and need to rest so I will be sharp for it.” Add, “I hope you understand.”
Presence Question:
Question:
How important is it to have smart looking luggage?
Answer:
Smart looking carry-on luggage adds a great deal of presence. It is an extension of you. However, never over-pack and organize the contents so when you have to take your laptop out to pass through security it is a seamless move.

Question:
It is appropriate ask for help putting luggage in the overhead bin?
Answer:
In today’s business community we are all equal. It is better to pack your carry-on with the idea that you can handle loading it in the overhead bin on your own. However, if someone offers, and you accept the assistance, thank them immediately.
