Tip for Organizations:
Question:
Most of our teams are virtual.Their only contact together comes in bi-monthly conference calls. How can they possibly build relationships?
Answer:
A “get to know you topic” more commonly known as an ice breaker in the beginning of a conference call, can help forge relationships in a virtual environment. The person responsible for the topic should rotate for each call. The topic should change with each call and the icebreaker should be very brief—maybe a minute or two.
Communication Question:
Question:
I need to talk on a speaker phone on a conference call. Often, I cannot hear the others on the call. And I understand some folks have a difficult time hearing me.
Answer:
Let everyone know you are on a speaker phone. Talk slowly while sitting near the microphone on the phone. Make sure the volume is turned up so you can hear other speakers.
Wardrobe Question:
Question:
I work from home and wear very casual clothing. Do you think it is important to dress up for conference calls?
Answer:
You will feel better and speak more professionally when you dress like you would for work when you participate on a team conference call.

It is always important to say your name before you speak on a group conference call. After you finish, confirm everyone understood what you just said and ask if there are any questions.
