February Tips For Communication & Image Success
Tip for Organizations:
Question:
Our team has become very diverse with new members from the outside joining us. We are also communicating with other countries. What are some suggestions that will help us be more effective in our face to face meetings?
Answer:
First, there may be facial and body language differences. For example, understand that we in the US typically need about an arm’s length for personal space. We immediately offer a handshake and we begin conversation right away. However, in other cultures personal space is closer than the length of an arm and handshakes are not always appropriate. As a general guideline, let the other person take the lead in conversation and in offering a handshake.
Communication Question:
Question:
What is the best way to handle conversations with an individual who does not speak English?
Answer: Language differences can be noticed in diction and pacing. Even a basic understanding of comments or questions can sometimes be elusive. Speak slowly, paraphrase the comment or question and then wait for a response. Do not rush the conversation.

Question:
I have been invited to a banquet in India and am concerned about any spicy foods that will be served because I cannot eat them.
Answer:
I am not sure how close you are to the hostess. If this is a business event, I would speak directly to the person who invited you on how to handle it. You do not want to insult the hostess nor do you want to make yourself sick.
