LinkedIn is very valuable for folks to get some insight about your background and for you to be able to search information about others. The important thing is to be specific about your background. I recommend looking at the verbiage of others on the site who are in similar industries and have related job responsibilities.

There is a section on your profile where you can list your interests. This creates a personal element that complements the professional side.

What clothing choices and colors should I wear for my LinkedIn photo?
Answer:
This is a professional network so a jacket and tie is appropriate for men. At the very least, wear a collared shirt. For women, they should also wear a professional outfit.

LinkedIn offers many groups (including company alumni) that you can join. All of these groups provide an opportunity to connect to others in the group. You can let folks know you are looking for a position or ask for a recommendation from someone in your group.
