Tip for Organizations:
Question:
The heat continues to hit record highs in our area. We would like to relax the dress recommendations to accommodate this. One suggestion has been to allow sleeveless tops for women and allow open toe and backless shoes for everyone. We are open to the sleeveless tops for women but are hesitating on the shoe suggestions.
Answer:
Sleeveless tops and dresses have become very popular for women. The fashion industry and television promotes this look along with Michele Obama, the first lady. I would suggest for client and customer interactions that a jacket be worn over the sleeveless top. Regarding shoes, the policy must be very specific so folks do not think flip flops are acceptable. Flip flops are beach wear and not a good choice for business attire.
Communication Question:
Question:
I have been replaced in a very high profile role. I am unsure how to handle it with my peers because I find it embarrassing.
Answer: It is important to be positive and smile. If necessary, mention it only once to those folks who may want some closure on it. A very good example of how to do it could be seen in Ann Curry’s farewell comments on the Today show. It was heartfelt, plus she maintained good composure when she spoke. She moved on afterwards with a smile and later, had a good interview with Matthew McConaughey.
Presence Question:
Question:
Are white athletic and golf shoes in?
Answer: It seems to be the trend. Tiger Woods wore them in a recent golf tournament. Also, Chris Pine wore them in “This Means War”. Remember, though, that these folks are paid to wear them by the designers. My thought is that if they don’t look matronly or old mannish, go for it.

Question:
How can I begin to develop a crisp personal introduction?
Answer:
Words are critical but even more important is your tone and pace. Practice helps master this. For example, once, while I was waiting to be interviewed for a television spot, I noticed that the anchor spent a few minutes warming up with voice exercises. So, before you are going to speak tone and warm up your voice.
